Juuso Järviniemi

Originally from Finland, Juuso Järviniemi studies International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. He was the President of the British JEF section in 2017/18, and has been a member of JEF-Europe’s Federal Committee since 2017. Juuso was the Editor-in-Chief of TNF in 2017/19.

Juuso’s interests include the democratic structures of the EU, the UK’s place in the European project, and European identity.

Deal with strangers, suffer in isolation – or feel European

European identity is by definition about feelings and emotions; meanwhile, questions starting with a “why” invite for objective, factual answers. It was perhaps for this reason that a question asked at a panel discussion I spoke at this summer [1] was so surprising despite its simplicity. Namely, the interviewer asked why one should feel European among all the other things. We already identify with our school, nation, city, fellow heavy metal fans and other communities, so why should we add Europe to the pile?
